Brighton & Hove Council has declared climate and biodiversity emergencies and aims to become carbon neutral by 2030. To support these goals, the council has developed the Circular Economy Routemap to 2035, which promotes the principles of minimising waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible, and protecting natural resources. The routemap is the result of extensive research and engagement with local circular experts and will evolve over time and be shaped by new opportunities, learning, and collaboration.
The council aims to lead the city in transitioning to circular principles and practices with five approaches, including changing design approaches, extending product life, exploring new business models, treating waste as a resource, and prioritising social, environmental, and economic value in resource use. To support implementation, a Circular Economy Action Plan has been created, currently focusing on two key sectors, the built environment and food & drink. These action plans detail the specifics of the role of the City Council in planning for a circular city, using its land and buildings to demonstrate circular solutions and procuring circular economy solutions, as well as the importance of collaboration with stakeholders in protecting the local environment.
