SOENECS was commissioned by UK Sport to explore the environmental impact of sports apparel and to recommend sustainable practices for the industry. The study highlighted the significant carbon footprint associated with the production, packaging, and transport of sports clothing, particularly synthetic materials like polyester. Despite existing initiatives, the sector faces challenges in the widespread adoption of circular economy practices.
Our research identified key opportunities to reduce waste and carbon emissions through improved material selection, packaging, and transport choices. Recommendations included using recycled materials, reducing packaging waste, and opting for low-emission transport methods. We also proposed strategies for better data transparency and sustainable procurement practices across the supply chain. To help the industry transition to a circular economy, we suggested creating a circular economy directory, forming working groups for knowledge exchange, and developing best practice guidelines. The study underscores the need for systemic changes and collaborative efforts to achieve a more sustainable future for sports apparel. Read full report here. Comments are closed.
